The right to vote is the foundation of every other freedom, and it must never be watered down by partisan gerrymandering, restrictive ID laws, or purged voter rolls. Every eligible Texan should be able to cast a ballot without facing long lines, limited polling locations, or unnecessary barriers, especially in communities of color and rural areas hit hardest by these restrictions. Democracy works best when more people participate, not fewer, and Texas Democrats support expanding early voting, mail-in ballot access, and same-day registration to make that possible. Protecting the ballot box isn't a partisan issue, it's about honoring the promise that every voice and every vote counts equally.
Working families in Texas deserve wages that keep pace with the cost of living, not stagnant pay while rent, groceries, and healthcare keep climbing. Raising the minimum wage isn't a handout, it's basic fairness for people working full-time and still falling behind. No one who works hard should have to choose between paying rent and putting food on the table. Texas Democrats believe an economy that works only for those at the top isn't working at all.
Every Texan deserves access to affordable, quality healthcare, regardless of zip code or income. Expanding Medicaid would bring coverage to hundreds of thousands of Texans currently caught in the coverage gap. A woman's right to make her own medical decisions, including the right to choose, is a fundamental freedom that government has no business taking away. Reproductive healthcare is healthcare, and politicians should not be standing between a woman and her doctor. A truly healthy Texas means investing in maternal health, mental health care, and rural hospitals that are closing their doors.
Public schools are the backbone of opportunity in Texas, and they deserve real investment, not budget cuts disguised as "school choice." Teachers should be paid a living wage that reflects the value of the work they do shaping our children's future. Every child, no matter their background or the neighborhood they grow up in, deserves access to a well-funded public school with modern resources. Diverting taxpayer dollars to private school vouchers drains funding from the public schools that serve the vast majority of Texas kids. Investing in early childhood education and smaller class sizes pays dividends for generations.
Keeping our communities safe and protecting the Second Amendment are not mutually exclusive goals. Common sense measures like universal background checks and red flag laws are supported by the vast majority of Texans, including gun owners. No parent should have to worry about whether their child will come home safely from school. Closing dangerous loopholes and keeping firearms out of the hands of those who intend to do harm is not about taking away rights, it's about saving lives. Real leadership means acting on gun violence instead of offering thoughts and prayers after every tragedy.
Every Texan deserves to be treated with dignity, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, or gender identity. Freedom means the government stays out of our personal decisions, whether that's who we love, how we worship, or how we start a family. Voting rights must be protected and expanded, not restricted through gerrymandering and burdensome ID laws. True equality means equal pay for equal work and an end to discrimination in housing, employment, and healthcare. Texas Democrats believe that freedom isn't real unless it's freedom for everyone, not just a select few.
